Sahra Becherer, born ‘96 in Austria, travelled to Florence, Italy at the age of nineteen, to study Classical Drawing & Painting at the Florence Academy of Art after working as a farmhand for several years.
She completed the Intensive 3-year Drawing & Painting Program under Daniela Astone and Ramiro Sanchez and was awarded the 4th year prize, a Graduate in Residence Program that allowed her to stay at the Academy for a year of specialization. As a Principal Instructor in the Drawing program under Simona Dolci and Mitch Shea and assistant for Plein air workshops with Tanvi Pathare, she collected first experiences in instructing art classes.
Upon completing the Graduate in Residence Program, Sahra went to Bad Homburg / Germany to support the Academy of Fine Art in building their Academic Program. Furthermore she guided students through the curriculum, passing on her knowledge about Drawing & Painting from life, Materials & Techniques and Artistic Anatomy.
Sahra is currently living in rural Austria, refining her artistic voice and building her trajectory. She also teaches workshops for Boesner and Gerstaecker in Austria and the Tadlock Art Academy in Frankfurt.
Her works are held in private collections in Europe, Asia and the US.
About
Growing up in rural Austria—in a remote village surrounded by forests and working the soil—I was exposed to raw nature and the elements throughout my childhood and youth. This sensory immersion and the blurred lines between human experience and the earth have been a refuge and remain a source of inspiration at the pulse of my practice.
My work explores the nuances of human experience through the narrative power of the figure. Building on classical foundations and studies from life, outer form blends with the shifting states of inner landscapes into an aesthetic where forms are lost and found within fluid fields of pigment. Figures are often captured with closed eyes in a state of introspection; because the true depth of experience defies literal depiction, these closed lids suggest an internal integration, weaving the sensory world into the fabric of the image.
I utilize layered sequences of motion to demonstrate the weight that the passing of time adds to the present moment, honoring its transience through blur and abstraction. Existing within the tension between opposites—such as the complementary palette of coral and teal and the clash of nature’s force with the fragility of human ego—my creative practice is a dance between control and surrender that explores the beauty of being subject to change.
Perceiving reality as an ever-evolving metamorphosis, I often integrate botanical details and the element of water as metaphors for nature’s reclamation of man-made structures. They symbolize the breakdown of the mind’s architecture as a necessary stage for recreation and evolution. Embracing the uncomfortable and uncertain as a symptom of life, my work evolves from a search for poetry within the full spectrum of human experience, holding space for both the tragedy and the celebration of existence.
Artist Statement
What we express is closely connected to how we experience. That's what makes art so immediate and beautifully human.
