Workshops

In 2026 I teach several workshops in Austria, with art supply companies in Dornbirn, Vienna and Graz. I offer both foundational courses and advanced insights, always progressively structured with attention to essential concepts rather than formulas.

🇦🇹 🇬🇧Workshops in Austria will usually be in German, but can be bilingual on demand.

Expressive Portrait – Light, Form and Color in Oils

Farbenlaube (Gerstaecker Dornbirn), 26. - 28. 02. 2026

In this 3-day workshop we will cover essential concepts in painting, such as rendering light on form with values and edges and dealing with color in oil paint. Following exercises and basic portrait theory the main project will be an expressive portrait from a chosen reference.

Painting with Oils - Foundations for beginners

In this 1-day workshop we will discuss essential concepts in painting, such as rendering light on form with values and edges and dealing with color in oil paint, as well as qualities of oil paint, color mixing and paint application. A simple motive will be painted in oils to put theory into practice.

To me, art training greatly benefits from two intertwining practices:

Firstly, analytical drawing and painting from life. Understanding light and form as it appears in nature, and interpreting it through simplification and compositional tools, lays the foundation for creating believable work in representational art. Recognizing the qualities of the elements in an image (such as shapes, tonal value, temperature, edges, visual weight etc.) and how they interact, complement, and depend on one another, allows you to make intentional decisions and curate your marks with confidence and competence. It is like practicing the scales for jazz musicians—the grammar behind the poetry.

Secondly, free experimental flow as a way to get in touch with your own voice, preferences, and unique quirks. This is where it gets fun, sometimes uncomfortable, personal and authentic. I find it crucial to link the analytical and the experimental approaches, as they nurture and complement each other, whichever direction your work may lean.
